Here’s a short write-up of the session we had on 5 Oct 2014.
- We are created in the image and likeness of God and all of us are special. Society has often diminished the human person at work, forgetting that each person has dignity. In our pursuit of success at work, it is important than we do not place work above human dignity.
- God created Man and Woman and call them to be fruitful and multiply. The foundation of society is built on the family. How mindful are we about the possible impact on our families when we make decisions regarding our work?
- God has given us dominion over his creation. Dominion is not about oppression or repression, but it is a call to be stewards of creation and to make creation more beautiful through the gifts and talents He has given us.
- How do we use the power and authority given to us in lieu of our work? Do we use it as co-creators to groom and encourage others? Do we see our work as a way to make creation more beautiful?
- We are created to work; we find fulfilment as human beings in work. Unfortunately, society associates work with economic production and often considers people who are not economically productive as not working e.g. housewives are often labelled as ‘not working’ even though they share in the work of creation and make creation beautiful.
- The reduction of work to just economic production results in the human person being viewed as mere ‘machines’ or ‘digits’ and the exploitation of the human person for economic gain.
- We are called to be good stewards at work and remember four principles of stewardship:
- Ownership – Acknowledging God as the ultimate ‘owner’ and our role as ‘caretakers’ will change the way we view success and possessions
- Accountability – How do we use the gifts that God has given us? How are we accountable to our relationships through our actions?
- Responsibility – As caretakers of His work, we are responsible to share our God-given gifts so that His vineyard bears fruit.
- Reward – How much trust do we have in God that He will bless us for being good stewards? Do we recognise God’s rewards in the intangibles e.g. fulfilment, relationships and joy?
